Up The Clumps and along The Thames: a circular walk of just over 10 miles from Wittenham Clumps.

We start the walk from The Wittenham Clumps free car park. The Clumps are 2 chalk hills steeped in history dating back to the Bronze Age. The name comes from the clumps of beech trees on top of both hills and are the oldest known planted hilltop beeches in England.

Walking around the ramparts of the Iron Age Castle hill we will have sweeping views across Oxfordshire and Berkshire. As we leave The Clumps we pass The Earth Trust Visitor Centre. The Earth Trust care for 500 hectares of accessible green spaces in Oxfordshire. Toilets are available for us to use here.

We head towards Long Wittenham and then on to The Thames Path. This is a pretty stretch of the river Thames and is enhanced by the Earth Trust's River of Life wetland habitat creation scheme which helps to improve the biodiversity and quality of the landscape. With views of The Clumps in the distance we will stop for lunch by the banks of The Thames.

Crossing The Thames at Days Lock we carry on towards Dorchester on Thames via Dyke Hills, a large fortified Iron Age settlement. Dorchester on Thames is a pretty village which was once an important Roman town. We will spend a short time here to visit the medieval Abbey which is now the parish Church. 

Continuing along the Thames we cross over at Little Wittenham. The last part of the walk takes us back up to the top of The Clumps before reaching the car park.
